BASS GUITAR PLAYING FAQS
Some common bass guitar lesson questions
Listed below are the most frequent questions I’m asked by students when learning how to play bass:
What is the best way to practice?
Here are few tips to try and help you practice more effectively:
• Try to have practice sessions at a set time to create a routine
• Structure practice sessions by having a list of planned items to work through
• Tick off each planned item as you complete it
• Use a room where you will not be disturbed
• Avoid marathon sessions – aim for around 30- 45 minutes
• Practice along to a drum machine or metronome to develop your timing
• Remember playing riffs or phrases you already know is not practice
How much do I need to spend to buy a good quality bass?
I’m a believer in most of the sound coming from the player rather than the instrument. Today you can buy a value for money bass for as little as £199 that can be used at any standard. For parents with kids who want to learn the bass then a good option is a bass guitar package which includes the bass, lead, amp & strap for as little as £125. The key is finding a bass that works for you so you can focus on learning the instrument.
Am I too old or too young to start learning?
I find age is not a problem. If anything there are advantages to learning the bass for fun when you retire as you have more time to enjoy the instrument and lessons during non-peak times. For children the physical size of the bass has been a barrier but these days reduced-size bass guitars are easily available with more choice of style.
How long are the lessons?
Lessons run from 30 minutes up to an hour and a half for those students traveling a distance. Most students below 16 tend to suit half-hour lessons. More experienced players may prefer one-hour sessions as the extra time is helpful when exploring more complex ideas and pieces.
What form do your lessons usually take?
Lessons are tailored to individual’s needs to make them relaxed and fun. The first part of the lesson consists of reviewing the practice you have completed prior to the session. Then we will progress to the next new subject (which could be a new tune, new exercise, new scale or arpeggio, depending on what stage you are at). Finally, suggested homework is agreed in preparation for the following lesson.
What should I bring to the lessons?
You will need to bring your bass guitar, your book(s) or grade materials and some note paper.
What can you offer as a teacher?
With my background in teaching and playing the bass guitar it is my job to tailor professional lessons to suit the needs of the individual student in a relaxed and fun environment to make it an enjoyable learning experience.
Do I have to take exams?
No, you don’t need to take any formal examinations. Exams are available for those students who wish to study grades and they can contribute towards entry into Further Education.
I am apprehensive about making mistakes. What advice can you give?
Don’t worry you are not the only one. The vast majority of students are nervous when starting lessons. This is a natural and expected reaction, and as a teacher it is my job to understand this and make you feel relaxed and build your confidence.
